This Saturday 24 February, the historic village of Evandale will be transformed into a hub of activity. The wheels of time turn back 100 years to the days of penny farthings and good old fashioned manners. Gentlemen will tip their top hats to you, ladies will sweep past in grand colonial dresses, and the laughter of children will fill the air.

What’s this all about, then?

Evandale’s charming Georgian streetscape springs to life with the excitement of the annual Evandale Village Fair and National Penny Farthing Championships! This much anticipated event started way back in 1983, and now attracts penny farthing enthusiasts from across Australia and all around the world.

Penny Farthing Races

Every year, penny farthing enthusiasts come to try their luck in a series of races, held on a triangular circuit in the centre of the village. There are a variety of races held throughout the day, including: separate championship races for ladies, juniors, and veterans; slow race; slalom; novice race; sprint; relay; biathlon; miss ‘n out; obstacle; and consolation. The feature race of the day is the big one, the National Penny Farthing Championship! The fastest eight riders advance through heats in to the final, which is over four laps of the circuit, with a total distance of one mile. Who will this year’s ultimate champion be?!

Wander around the market stalls, grab a bite to eat, and check out the entertainment in the streets and parks surrounding the race circuit. Classic car enthusiasts, have a gander at the veteran cars. Entertainment includes music, dancing, clowns, street entertainers, face painting, a puppet show, and pony rides (for the children). Don’t miss the excitement of the Grand Parade at 1.30pm!
