Originially Poatina was built in the 1950s to house Hydro workers involved in building infrastructure for the new Waddamana Power Station and Great Lake Power Scheme.

Today, Poatina Resort Village provides family-friendly accommodation, shops and a variety of events and activities. There is a swimming pool, tennis courts, village green, and a golf course (the highest in Tasmania).

Poatina is a natural sanctuary for wildlife. Walking and bicycle trails are fun to explore, visit a waterfall, go trout fishing, enjoy a picnic or BBQ.
